About the Cisco CCNA 200-301 exam

The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) is Cisco's entry-level networking certification. The 200-301 version covers a broad range of foundational networking topics from routing and switching through to network security and programmability.

The exam has 100–120 questions, a 120-minute time limit, and a passing score typically around 825/1000. Question types include multiple choice, drag-and-drop, and simulation questions where you configure virtual Cisco devices.

Sample CCNA practice questions

A router receives a packet destined for 192.168.10.50. The routing table has: 192.168.10.0/24 via 10.0.0.1, 192.168.10.48/28 via 10.0.0.2, and 0.0.0.0/0 via 10.0.0.3. Which next-hop will the router use?
A. 10.0.0.1
B. 10.0.0.2 ✓
C. 10.0.0.3
D. The packet will be dropped
Routers use longest prefix match. 192.168.10.48/28 covers .48–.63, which includes .50. This /28 is more specific than the /24. The default route (/0) is least specific and only used when no other match exists.
Which spanning tree port state forwards frames and populates the MAC address table?
A. Blocking
B. Listening
C. Learning
D. Forwarding ✓
In classic STP — Blocking: discards frames, no MAC learning. Listening: participates in STP, no MAC learning. Learning: populates MAC table, does not forward. Forwarding: both populates MAC table AND forwards frames.
What is the purpose of the OSPF DR/BDR election on a multi-access network segment?
A. To reduce the number of OSPF adjacencies and LSA flooding on the segment ✓
B. To provide redundancy for the default gateway
C. To authenticate OSPF neighbors
D. To prevent routing loops
Without DR/BDR every router would form adjacencies with every other router (n(n-1)/2). The DR reduces this — all DROTHER routers form full adjacencies only with the DR and BDR. HSRP/VRRP handles gateway redundancy.

CCNA study strategy

Lab everything you can

CCNA simulation questions require you to configure actual Cisco IOS commands. Use Cisco Packet Tracer (free) or GNS3 for hands-on practice. If you can configure it in a lab, you'll recognize it in a sim.

Subnetting must be automatic

Subnetting appears throughout the CCNA — routing, ACLs, VLSM, summarization. Practice until you can subnet a /25, /26, /27, and /28 instantly without writing anything down.

IP Connectivity is 25% of the exam

Prioritize understanding how OSPF forms adjacencies, elects DR/BDR, and calculates cost. Know the difference between neighbor and full adjacency states.
